Some battles are best not fought alone. This includes the battle of the bulge. Nowadays, there are tons of nonsurgical, noninvasive ways to eliminate stubborn body fat, making the battle of the bulge a war with far less casualties. If you’ve been researching noninvasive methods for fat reduction you may have come across CoolSculpting and Cavi-Lipo, which are two popular procedures. Cavi-Lipo goes by a few different names (which we’ll get into more below). It’s also known as Ultrasonic Cavitation (a more common name than Cavi-Lipo). It essentially works by zapping and liquefying fat cells, which, afterwards, are eliminated through the body’s lymphatic system. Patients usually hear a sound emanating as the ultrasonic machine is used. Coolsculpting is a FDA approved body sculpting procedure that uses controlled cooling to eliminate stubborn fat cells that are naturally processed out of the body over time. In this article we’ll explore more about each method and hopefully, at the end, leave you with a better idea of which will work for you.
Basics of CoolSculpting
CoolSculpting is the most popular of the nonsurgical, noninvasive fat reduction procedures. It uses targeted cooling to remove diet and exercise resistant fat cells from the body. This FDA approved technology works because Harvard University scientists recognized that fat freezes at a lower temperature than other parts of the body. This is the technological principle that CoolSculpting is based on. When the targeted fat zone gets blasted with targeted cool temperatures they die in a process known as cryolipolysis, which literally means “cell death”. As the fat cells are being destroyed none of the other cells or tissues in the body are hurt from this process. The cells that were destroyed leave the body over time in a process known as apoptosis, which is ‘cell death.’ The best part of CoolSculpting is, once those fat cells are removed they are gone forever and they don’t grow back.
This is how CoolSculpting works: First off, special applicators are used to deliver targeted cooling. By “targeted cooling”we mean that the applicators can be used to eliminate fat from various spots on the body. These specific fat pockets, or fat zones, should be diet and exercise resistant. This means that even though you’re using healthy eating and exercise the fat still remains. The applicators are used to suction a specific area or fat zone on the body and once the fat cells die they are naturally eliminated from the body as waste.
Basics of Cavi-Lipo
Cavi-Lipo goes by a few different names, which can make it a little confusing. It goes by Ultrasonic Cavitation and also ‘ultra cavitation.’ Just like CoolSculpting it’s a popular, noninvasive, nonsurgical procedure that’s designed to eliminate fat. How does it differ from CoolSculpting? Well, the main difference is in how the fat is broken down. CoolSculpting uses controlled cooling to target and blast unwanted fat. On the other hand, Cavi-Lipo or Ultrasonic Cavitation employs the technology of ultrasonic waves to break down pesky fat cells. In other words, to sum it up, Cavi-Lipo is a nonsurgical method for the removal of localized fat and cellulite that eliminates that fat with the use of ultrasound technology.
Unlike CoolSculpting, which has been around since the beginning and is considered the OG of noninvasive body contouring, this procedure is one of the newer ones on the market. It can target localized, specific areas of the body including the abdomen, love handles, upper arms, thighs, and chin. It works by applying localized pressure to fat cells with the use of ultrasonic vibrations. The fat cells are then liquified and the body excretes the liquid fat overtime as waste.
CoolSculpting vs Cavi-Lipo: What are the Side Effects?
The most important thing to know about these procedures is that they have both been approved by the FDA. Therefore they are both considered to be safe and effective fat removal treatments. With that said, all treatments have possible side effects. Here we’ll talk a little about these temporary side effects. With CoolSculpting, targeted cooling is used to eliminate fat. These cool temperatures might prove to be uncomfortable for some, especially those that don’t like the cold. The procedure may cause soreness, redness, swelling and bruising. But these side effects are temporary and will go away once the procedure is complete. Cavi-Lipo or Ultrasonic Cavitation is thought to be a relatively pain-free procedure, but some report a tingling sensation. Just like with CoolSculpting, this is considered temporary and should go away pretty quickly. The best part about these noninvasive methods is that they don’t come with any of the downsides of surgery like anesthesia, needles and a hefty recovery time.
Am I a candidate for CoolSculpting or Cavi-Lipo?
For both of these treatments the ideal candidate should be healthy overall and have specific zones of diet and exercise resistant fat that they want to get rid of. One of the most important things to consider is whether the treatment will be able to address your specific needs and meet your specific body goals. Overall, a good candidate is someone who wants to permanently blast fat but doesn’t want the downtime or risks associated with surgery. A good candidate will also know that neither treatment is meant as a solution for weight loss. A healthy diet and exercise are still needed and so, a good candidate will recognize that these treatments are a way to jumpstart healthy eating and exercise rituals.
CoolSculpting vs Cavi-Lipo: Overall
If you’re looking for an excellent way to get rid of stubborn fat these are both great methods. Why? First of all, they’re both noninvasive and nonsurgical. That means they don’t have the risks associated with surgery, or the hefty recovery time. Noninvasive means there’s nothing “invading” your body. No needles, no anesthesia and no visits to the hospital for preoperative blood work. Overall these are excellent fat removal methods, but we think CoolSculpting is better.
