CoolSculpting vs Ultrasonic Cavitation: What’s the Difference?

If you’re looking to reduce fat with a noninvasive, nonsurgical procedure, you’ve likely found that there are many different options on the market today. Two of the most popular are CoolSculpting and Ultrasonic Cavitation. These options are popular because of their ability to effectively target specific areas of the body like the love handles, chin or arms. Some procedures only blast fat in the chin or another localized zone, but these procedures offer you the option to target fat in a variety of areas. In this article we’re going to explore all that these treatments have in common and all that makes them different. In the end we hope you’ll have a better idea of which treatment will best meet your needs.

Basics of CoolSculpting

consultationCoolSculpting is known worldwide as a nonsurgical, noninvasive fat reduction procedure that uses targeted cooling to blast stubborn fat cells. The technology works because the Harvard University scientists that discovered CoolSculpting recognized that fat freezes at a lower temperature than other parts of the body. Therefore, the targeted fat zone is blasted with cool temperatures and the fat cells die in a process known as cryolipolysis. None of the other cells or tissues in the body are hurt from this process. Once the fat cells are killed, they leave the body over time in a process known as apoptosis, which is ‘cell death.’ The best part of CoolSculpting is, once those fat cells are removed they are gone forever and they don’t grow back.

How does CoolSculpting work? By using applicators to deliver targeted cooling. The applicators can be applied to a variety of spots on the body, like we said above. Some other procedures on the market can only target one specific zone on the body or maybe two, but not CoolSculpting. CoolSculpting is able to blast fat in a variety of places. The most popular spots are the chin, love handles, arms, and back. The reason these areas are so popular is because they are prime examples of diet and exercise resistant fat, which is fat that doesn’t budge, no matter how much healthy eating or exercise you put in.

Basics of Ultrasonic Cavitation

Ultrasonic Cavitation is also known as ‘ultra cavitation,’ and it is another popular noninvasive, nonsurgical treatment for fat loss. It is different from CoolSculpting because, while CoolSculpting uses cool temperatures to target and remove unwanted fat, Ultrasonic Cavitation uses ultrasound waves to break down stubborn fat cells. It’s a nonsurgical way to get rid of localized fat and cellulite. This procedure is one of the newer ones on the market, especially when compared to CoolSculpting, which is considered the “OG” as it was FDA approved over a decade ago.Ultrasonic Cavitation targets specific areas of the body including the abdomen, love handles, upper arms, thighs, and chin. Unlike CoolSculpting, Ultrasonic Cavitation usually takes a few sessions in order to get the most ideal results. While CoolSculpting is usually done in one or two sessions, Ultrasonic Cavitation will take a few visits, each lasting about an hour.

How does Ultrasonic Cavitation work? By applying pressure to fat cells with the use of ultrasonic vibrations. High pressure causes the fat cells to be reduced to liquid and the body excretes the liquid fat overtime as waste.

CoolSculpting vs Ultrasonic Cavitation: What are the Side Effects?

coolsulpting treatmentBoth of these procedures have been approved by the FDA and are considered to be safe and effective fat removal treatments. With that said, all treatments have possible side effects. Because CoolSculpting uses cool temperatures to eliminate fat, some might find this uncomfortable, especially those that are bothered by the cold. Most of the side effects associated with CoolSculpting, like soreness, redness, swelling and bruising are temporary and  will go away once the procedure is complete. Any remaining soreness should go away shortly thereafter. Ultrasonic Cavitation is thought to be a relatively pain-free procedure, but some report a tingling sensation as it’s being done. Just like with CoolSculpting, this is considered temporary and should go away pretty quickly. Also, these procedures are both noninvasive so they don’t come with any of the downsides of surgery like anesthesia, needles and a long recovery time.

Am I a candidate for CoolSculpting or Ultrasonic Cavitation?

For both of these treatments the ideal candidate should be healthy overall and have specific zones of diet and exercise resistant fat that they want to get rid of. One of the most important things to consider is whether the treatment will be able to address your specific needs and meet your specific body goals. Overall, a good candidate is someone who wants to permanently blast fat but doesn’t want the downtime or risks associated with surgery. A good candidate will also know that neither treatment is meant as a solution for weight loss. A healthy diet and exercise are still needed and so, a good candidate will recognize that these treatments are a way to jumpstart healthy eating and exercise rituals.

CoolSculpting vs Ultrasonic Cavitation: Overall

Both of these methods are excellent at getting rid of stubborn fat. They’re both noninvasive and nonsurgical, meaning they don’t have the risks associated with surgery, or the long recovery time. Noninvasive means no needles, no anesthesia and no visits to the hospital for preoperative blood work. For this reason, CoolSculpting and Ultrasonic Cavitation are an excellent counter option to liposuction. Why? They deliver the same result as liposuction by permanently removing fat. They just take a little bit longer to do it. While Liposuction sucks fat out of the body with a cannula, CoolSculpting and Ultrasonic Cavitation destroy fat cells, which the body naturally gets rid of over a period of time. Overall these are excellent fat removal methods, but we think CoolSculpting is better.
