What’s the difference: EmSculpt vs CoolSculpting

Noninvasive, non-surgical treatments are finally getting the recognition they deserve. People are taking notice – you can really get results that make an impact, with minimal downtime by exploring a non-surgical treatment. Ever-improving technology is making these methods even more popular – and there are no signs of their popularity slowing down. If you’re a good candidate, non-surgical body sculpting can greatly improve your body – and even your mind. Healthy body, healthy mind – that’s what they say, right?

In this article we’re going to explore two non-surgical, noninvasive body sculpting methods:

CoolSculpting and EmSculpt. We’re going to compare and contrast each, and at the end we hope you will have enough information to decide which procedure is better for you and your personal goals.

Basics of CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting uses controlled cooling to freeze and kill fat that’s resistant to diet and exercise. It’s popular and it’s performed worldwide. CoolSculpting works with a process called cryolipolysis. During a CoolSculpting treatment, isolated fat deposits are exposed to a precise temperature, which freezes subcutaneous fat cells. This process doesn’t harm the skin or tissue – it just kills fat. Once frozen, the fat cells are permanently damaged, and they’ll naturally be excreted from the body in a process called apoptosis. The best part is, CoolSculpting is permanent – once the fat cells are destroyed, they don’t come back.

Basics of Emsculpt

EmSculpt works specifically on the abdomen and buttocks by melting away fat cells and stimulating the underlying muscles with HIFEM energy. These contractions can’t be duplicated manually – they’re known as Supramaximal contractions and they can only be produced by the energy from an EmSculpt machine.

Now, let’s get into the differences between these two body contouring methods:

CoolSculpting vs EmSculpt: How do they do on safety?

CoolSculpting and EmSculpt are both FDA-approved. In other words, the FDA performed research and testing, and found that both treatments, when performed by a qualified provider, are safe and effective. CoolSculpting has been around a little bit longer than EmSculpt. EmSculpt is kind of the “new kid on the block”. As a result of being around longer, more people have had CoolSculpting procedures and more is known about the treatment. For that reason, more people feel confident about getting CoolSculpting done.

CoolSculpting vs EmSculpt: What are the results?

CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved method for removing targeted fat – and CoolSculpting is thought to be a more desirable procedure because of that. It can target specific ‘problem zones’ on the body with an array of handpieces. When CoolSculpting first came out, there weren’t very many handpieces – but now there are quite a few. CoolSculpting technology has really come into its own and now is a great time to take advantage of all CoolSculpting has to offer.

EmSculpt’s claim to fame is that it builds muscle while reducing fat. To accomplish this, the EmSculpt procedure is performed about five times over the course of two weeks. After about a month, you’ll start to see results. But because this treatment is so new, it’s really hard to say what the average results are. We don’t know how people maintain their figure after an EmSculpt procedure because there just isn’t enough information yet.

CoolSculpting vs EmSculpt: Are they comfortable?

CoolSculpting works by freezing fat with cold temperatures and, thereby, killing it permanently. This is done with a curved suction handpiece. The main source of uncomfortability for patients is the numbing associated with the procedure, but this is only temporary and will go away afterwards. For the most part, patients who have experienced numbness call it “uncomfortable” but not “unbearable”. Plus, there are many CoolSculpting facilities that work hard to ensure patients get their treatments done in a luxe, spa-like setting.

According to its manufacturer, EmSculpt is thought to be a painless procedure, and one without downtime. Because the procedure is new – we don’t know if there are any adverse reactions to it. What patients do report feeling is muscle soreness a day later – similar to the day after a good workout. Because EmSculpt doesn’t use hot or cold temperatures to remove fat, it may be considered a more comfortable treatment, but the truth is, both of these non-surgical, noninvasive procedures are pain-free.

CoolSculpting vs EmSculpt: What’s the time commitment?

A CoolSculpting treatment cycle lasts about 35-60 minutes. Of course, the exact time it takes depends on the handpiece size, the practitioner, etc. Depending on what you want to get out of it, your CoolSculpting provider might recommend 2 treatments. The treatments will likely be spaced out, maybe a month apart, in order to get the best results.

Generally, there’s a bit more of a time commitment with EmSculpt – you have to come into the office more often. With EmSculpt, treatments take approximately 5 to 30 minutes, and most patients will require at least 4 sessions performed 2-3 days apart. In other words, over the course of two weeks, patients visit the EmSculpt office a whole bunch.

CoolSculpting vs. EmSculpt: What’s the downtime like?

Both treatments are viable options to surgery because of their minimal downtime. When going for a CoolSculpting procedure, you may experience some redness and a numbing sensation in the target area. With EmSculpt, you may feel soreness, which according to the manufacturer may feel like the soreness you get after a good workout. When compared to a surgical procedure, both of these body sculpting methods deliver outstanding results without all of the waiting and follow-up.

CoolSculpting vs EmSculpt: Am I a candidate?

CoolSculpting is great for people who have diet and exercise-resistant fat – the type of stubborn fat you can pinch. An ideal client is someone who is in good health and physical shape, and is motivated to make positive, lasting changes after their CoolSculpting procedure is done. The best thing about CoolSculpting is that so many different parts of the body can be targeted, so if a patient has one particular problem zone, it can be concentrated on in order to get the desired results.

EmSculpt is only for the abdomen or the buttocks, which decreases the likelihood that any particular person will be a good candidate. There’s a bit of varying information out there about who is a good candidate for EmSculpt – though, the manufacturer says that anyone looking to decrease fat and increase muscle mass is ideal.

CoolSculpting vs EmSculpt: Overall

Looking back at everything we’ve just learned in the article above, CoolSculpting seems to be the best bet – and that’s for a few different reasons. First, CoolSculpting is a more versatile treatment – with it, you can treat areas all over the body, while on the other hand, EmSculpt can currently only treat the abdomen and buttocks. This brings us to our second reason: CoolSculpting has been around longer. It has been approved by the FDA longer and more is known about the technology. So, while CoolSculpting is completely cutting edge, offering up new target zones often, it is also a technology that has been around for a while and certain practitioners have really become acquainted with the technology in its entirety. This brings us to perhaps the best reason: We, at PeakBody CoolSculpting are Westchester’s #1 providers. Next we’ll tell you a little about us.
