What’s the difference: Liposonix vs CoolSculpting

When it comes to the battle against stubborn body fat, the past decade has seen the birth of several non-invasive, non-surgical procedures that claim to bust bulge and move people toward their desired body.

CoolSculpting has been around much longer and is more requested by patients than most of these other fat busting technologies, but still, you may have some questions about how these treatments perform overall. You might be wondering: Do these non-surgical treatments work? What is the difference between two of the biggest examples out there: Liposonix and CoolSculpting? And, perhaps the most important question, which one is right for you?

In this article we’ll explore all of these topics and explain the differences in these procedures. You’ll see that the main differences between these two treatments are found in two things: the temperature at which the procedure starts killing fat; and where you need to lose fat from on your body. But more on this later.

The Basics of CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting uses controlled cooling technology to freeze and kill fat that’s resistant to diet and exercise. It’s a very popular procedure and it’s performed worldwide. CoolSculpting works with a process called cryolipolysis. During a CoolSculpting treatment, isolated fat deposits are exposed to a precise temperature, which freezes subcutaneous fat cells and kills them off. This process doesn’t harm the skin or tissue – it just kills fat. Once frozen, the fat cells are permanently damaged, and they’ll naturally be excreted from the body in a process called apoptosis. The best part is, CoolSculpting is permanent – once the fat cells are destroyed, they don’t come back.

The Basics of Liposonix?

Liposonix is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment that reduces fat in the abdomen and flanks with high-intensity ultrasound energy or HIFU. Right now, it is only FDA-cleared to be used on the abdomen and flanks.

More about HIFU

This energy, HIFU, is also used by doctors during diagnostic ultrasounds. The HIFU used during a Liposonix procedure was designed to target specific fat pockets by heating them and destroying them. Because HIFU is used, there is always the chance of a skin burn with this treatment.

With this procedure, just like with CoolSculpting or traditional liposuction, fat is permanently killed after just one session. Once the fat is gone, it doesn’t come back. And very similarly to CoolSculpting, it takes the body a period of time to naturally expel the dead fat. Some Liposonix patients opt for more treatments down the line – but one treatment is enough to remove a good amount of fat from the body.

How are CoolSculpting & Liposonix similar?

Both of these procedures are non-invasive and don’t require surgery as opposed to traditional Liposuction. They’re also similar because both of these procedures, like Liposuction, remove fat permanently. Once the fat is gone it won’t come back. Also, both CoolSculpting and Liposonix take about three months for the patient to see maximum results. Dead fat cells that were killed during the treatment are naturally excreted from the body over a period of time. And, both procedures take about an hour to complete – CoolSculpting is usually a little bit less than that, depending on the target area.

How are CoolSculpting & Liposonix different?

The biggest difference between these two procedures is in how they get rid of fat. CoolSculpting uses cold temperatures to kill fat; while Liposonix uses heat and high-intensity ultrasound energy to battle the bulge. Another big difference is that CoolSculpting can be applied to many different target areas on the body; while Liposonix, on the other hand, cannot. Liposonix is only FDA-cleared for its application to the abdomen and flanks.

Why is CoolSculpting better than Liposonix?

In summary, we think CoolSculpting beats Liposonix for the following reasons:

  • CoolSculpting technology has been around for longer and is trusted by more patients.
  • CoolSculpting has many different applications and can bust fat in many zones on the body.
  • CoolSculpting uses cold to reduce fat, while Liposonix uses high-frequency energy.
